Maintenance Therapy

Here is a link to a good New York Times article, printed July 20th of this year about the trend to extend chemotherapy in cancer patients. This trend, sometimes called maintenance therapy, is now commonly used for multiple myeloma. Controversial questions include: What is the optimum dosing schedule and when do you stop treatment? What about the cost? Where are the studies supporting maintenance therapy? Should you use some sort of maintenance therapy even after undergoing a stem cell transplant? What are the long term health risks to extended use? So many questions and so few answers! I will take the next few days to try and answer some of these questions. But be prepared to be disappointed! There aren’t a lot of scientific answers, only opinions and more questions.
Feel good and keep smiling! Pat
