Time To Begin Assembling My Florida Multiple Myeloma Health Care Team

Reading Lori and David Puente’s story the past few days, I couldn’t help but think about my own multiple myeloma journey–a journey which will undergo a major shift as I begin to assemble a new medical team here in my new home state of Florida.  A number of readers e-mailed me after they learned of my move.  Several wrote to share their experiences and recommend a doctor or facility they believe in.  I gave it all a great deal of thought and have decided to use Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa for several reasons.  First, Moffitt comes highly recommended by Dr. Keith Stewart, a myeloma specialist from Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Second, one of our readers appreciates the care he receives there.  I will be using his myeloma doc, Melissa Alsina.  I haven’t met Dr. Alsina, but she is the department head, an associate proffessor and apparently is open to different myeloma fighting strategies.  Third, Moffitt is located on the north side of Tampa, which makes it a relatively easy one hour drive.  Finally and most importantly, Dr. Alsina is an “approved provider” under my wife’s Cigna Insurance plan.  That’s the part I am most anxious about–using a new insurance plan to pay for my multiple myeloma care.  Now I just need to try and coordinate blood draw/test schedules and hopefully find a location closer to my home to do the “sticking.”  After all, I will still need monthly finger “pricks” to monitor my INR.  I certainly don’t want to drive all the way to Tampa just for that.  Guess I better get to work setting this all up… My first appointment with Dr. Alsina is in less than two weeks!  Oh, the joys of health care…
Feel good and keep smiling!  Pat
