Creation of the new national high-risk pool is vitally important to any cancer or multiple myeloma patient who is having trouble finding health insurance. The International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) has info about the new program available now.
New Information on High Risk Pools from the National Institute of Health Care Reform
The new health reform law requires the creation of a temporary national high-risk pool program to provide subsidized health coverage to people who are uninsured because of pre-existing medical conditions. It may start as early as July 1, 2010 in some states.
A Policy Analysis from the National Institute of Health Care Reform came out last month with detailed information on the subject and what it could mean for you. You may view it on our website.

Hopefully this is only the first step in making it easier–and more affordable–for my fellow multiple myeloma patients to find and keep health insurance coverage. I know it was a challenge for me to gain access to coverage once I moved to Florida. Fortunately, my wife Pattie’s insurance provided by her employer was a good option for me. But I wasn’t sure I would qualify for a while. Scary, since once I left Minnesota/Wisconsin my Blue Cross policy became void.
Feel good and keep smiling! Pat
