Low carb smoothie recipe that’s perfect for “dex days”

I’m not a big “smoothie” guy.  One reason:  I hate to clean the blender!  But  a fellow myeloma blogger, Ed from California, emailed me this recipe and swears by it:

The recipe was provided by Jeanne Peters, RD – a registered dietician and owner of the Nourishing Wellness clinic in Redondo Beach, CA.

1-2 Scoops of Protein Powder (available at most health food stores, Trader Joes, etc.)
1 cup of Soy Milk or regular milk
1 teaspoon of Konsyl  – psyllium fiber.  A gentle and effective stool softener/fiber supplement

1 tablespoon of Flax Seed Meal (good source of Omega 3 and fiber)
1 banana
Ice – Best if chopped before you put it into the blender.Directions:

Put the first four ingredients into a blender and whirl is for a few seconds to mix it nicely and keep it from clumping. 
Add the banana and ice.  You will need to experiment with the ice to adjust to the consistency you like.  Try starting with about a cup.

It’s the low carb focus of the concoction which caught my eye.  Listen to what Ed had to say:

I can relate to a lot of what you say about being in the dexametha-zone.  I too suffer from the distended stomach, gastroperesis, and wired/tired cycle.  Fortunately, I handle the Velcade pretty well….very little neuropathy.  I am also very sensitive to carbs on my during treatment cycles.  Substituting protein smoothies helps a lot!

By the way, my nurse tells me that the Zofran is also very much too blame for the bloating.  Perhaps more so than the Dex.

Thanks, Ed!  Since I tend to be carb sensitive even when I’m not using dexamethasone, I think I will give this smoothie recipe a try!

LOW CARB TIP:  Check the label of your favorite protein powder.  Today I checked-out several brands on the grocery store shelves.  One had a total carb count of 46.  That’s more carbohydrates than a stack of pancakes!   Look for a total carb count of less than 10.  A high quality protein powder should have some fiber, so subtract the 2 or 3 grams of fiber from the total, and you should be OK.  I found one brand with a net carb count of 7.  Better.  Also, check the simple sugar number.  Shouldn’t be higher than 3.0  If you look carefully, you can find numbers as low as 1.0

Feel good, keep smiling and eat lots of raw vegetables–that way you won’t have to worry about all of this nutritional chemistry!  Pat
