Fred from Canada forwarded me several interesting links about a virus that “seems to want to kill myeloma cells,” according to Dr. Don Morris with the University of Calgary:

Myeloma breakthrough at the U of C

Researchers at the University of Calgary are looking at using a virus to treat a cancer called multiple myeloma. On Wednesday’s edition of the Eyeopener, host Jennifer Keene spoke with Dr. Don Morris, the lead researcher on the study…

CICK HERE to listen to this fascinating radio interview on the CBC.

And CLICK HERE to view a TV news report about the same virus–known as reovirus:

Reovirus treatment the cure for cancer?

Wed, Aug 29 : Reovirus has been found to effectively kill breast and colorectal cancers and now a Calgary team is seeing results against the blood cancer multiple myeloma. It’s a cancer that is incurable but researchers hope this work could give patients new hope…

Love those Canadian accents!  Especially in the second report out of Montreal.

Dr. Morris stressed how well this new therapy may work when combined with existing therapies.  Hope he’s right!

Feel good and keep smiling!  Pat

This is so cool and Reolysin is already in clinical trials so it is not just an in vitro deal. The trial is being held in Ohio under Dr. Hofmeister, a myeloma expert, who I think is/was an advisor to the Myeloma Beacon. It is being used in the relapsed setting. P.S. one day in the not too distant future the combo might be Reolysin/JQ1…hopefully without the dex!

I will post some links about Ohio study tomorrow…

Thanks very much Pat, for posting these links. It was on those two news outlets here in Calgary last week and two friends called me about it! (You have both links.) My friend Carol, who heads up the support group, is the patient interviewed. I take it from what Terry says that Reolysin is related to that reo virus…must look it up.

  4. Pat Killingsworth Says:

You are most welcome! Nancy, do you belong to a support group? Maybe Millennium would pay my way up to Canada to visit. Not sure if they would do that or not…

  5. Nancy Shamanna Says:

Thanks Pat….we have a very strong support group here…we keep outgrowing the venues to have our social events! We take in all of southern Alberta, and Calgary is a big city now too. I can take the idea to our next steering committee meeting! (Southern Alberta Myeloma Patients Society…we do have a website also).

  6. Pat Killingsworth Says:

Wouldn’t it be fun if I could come-up and visit! If steering committee would like me to pursue it, let me know…

  7. Nancy Shamanna Says:

Of Course, Pat…I will ask them at a meeting. Will get back to you by e-mail about it.

    Pat Killingsworth,

Let me know more about OHIO study. My brother tried to find more info at Ohio State University and was stone walled.

  9. Pat Killingsworth Says:

How, why do you think she was “stone walled?”
