Our good friend and healthy lifestyle columnist, Danny Parker, has been off-the-grid for several days at a Buddhist retreat. Upon his return, Danny discovered lots of comments and questions about Interleukin-6 (IL-6). He has been gracious enough to put-together an unscheduled column to try and help explain what’s going on:

I’m guessing that most of our readers don’t “tweet.” Facebook seems to be the more popular social media among us 50 and older types. But I like twitter. And doctors love it! Easy way to access abstracts and to post theirs.

I think Danny’s column this week is exceptional. See what you think:

I’m home! Pattie was having transportation issues taking me home on Monday–and I was feeling surprisingly good–so we checked-out around 6 o’clock Sunday evening. I chased the doctor down the hall using my walker trying to get him to change is orders from Monday to Sunday. The fact I could catch him that way may have helped influence his decision!

I suppose I could use Facebook, Twitter and/or CaringBridge to communicate how I’m doing. But I’m a blogger and understand that I will be missing the bulk of my readers if I were to rely only on social media. So I plan to post updates from time to time along with other myeloma educational posts that I have scheduled.

A reader emailed me yesterday and asked how many subscribers/readers I have. I responded, “We are currently averaging between 1,200-1,300 page views daily.” That translates into between 500-600 daily readers, best I can tell. April 5th I wrote a “catch-all” post that blows these numbers away. Almost 2,300 people have read this post in less than a month:

I should have saved yesterday’s crazy Cialis post for Fun Friday! today. Lets flip-flop the days. Today I would like to share two upcoming Cure Talk broadcast dates with you. The first features our monthly Myeloma Cure Panel and guest Dr. Robert Orlowski, myeloma specialist from M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas. The second is something new; the benefits of managing stress with yoga.

It didn’t take long for our good friend and nutritional columnist, Danny Parker, to weigh-in on yesterday’s post about the Johns Hopkins “nutrition can cure cancer” hoax–he emailed me this a few hours later:

Myeloma nutritional expert, Danny Parker, has been following curcumin research for years. He emailed me last evening, excited about a new micro study he found:

It’s official: I have kicked my daily Diet Coke habit. Why bother–especially since I was only drinking one or two cans a day? Haven’t you been paying attention? Remember this post from a month ago:

Our good friend and nutritional columnist, Danny Parker, is excited about a new study released last week in the Journal of the American Society of Hematology: Improving overall survival and overcoming adverse prognosis in the treatment of cytogenetically high-risk multiple myeloma.

Food for thought from our nutritional guru, Danny Parker:

Danny Parker has been forwarding me information about how bad drinking soda is for me ever since he saw me drinking a Diet Coke the last time we met. So Danny, this expose’ I just posted about the evils of soda pop on HelpWithCancer.org was written for you, good friend:

Why consume lots of kelp? Here’s more about that, including a tasty soup recipe from Danny Parker:

I fear I have become too consumed with the technical side of myeloma lately. Let’s shift gears and focus more on our overall wellness for a couple of days. And who better to help us find our nutritional center than our good friend, Danny Parker!

Before I get started, did you happen to read Danny Parker’s comment yesterday in response to Mark’s hope that myeloma researchers can and will focus more on new ways to attack myeloma cells, instead of ways to make more of the same a bit better?
